  • How do I control algae growth in my water lily pond?
Plants, plants, plants. Marginal plants are natures filter system consuming nitrates at a good rate. We rarely see a natural pond or lake full of algae where there is plenty of marginal plant growth. Over many years we have established that a minimum of 60% of the ponds circumference requires planting up to maintain balance and clarity. Additionally surface cover is essential. The more sun we get, the more intense the sunlight, the more cover we need to help prevent algae bloom. Balance is everything As most floating plants are banned in Spain, due to their invasive nature, adding an extra waterlily or two, will do the same job.
  • How do I care for my water lilies?
All our waterlilies are outdoor grown but they still need a little care when adding them to your pond. The most common cause of waterlily losses are down to stress / temperature shock. Plant your new lily up into a suitable container (minimum 30cm across for best results) and keep in 30 to 40cm water depth for 2 to 3 weeks, then, as the leaves spread, slowly lower it to the depth you require it to live in. Too deep, too soon, kills waterlilies! WE recommend Osmocote slow release fertilzer to be added to your waterlily in early May, which will then last the whole season. Food = more flowers and foliage. Osmocote is available in our accessories section.
